I am suffering from severe, intermittent, muscle pain, and some joint pain. Might be ‘Fibromyalgia’ said the doctor. But I have read that this can be one of the side effects of alendronic acid, and it may not emerge for many years after starting this medication.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Hello
I had severe muscle and joint pain soon after starting AA. I was barely able to walk up and down stairs after previously having had no problems. I stopped AA and pain gradually disappeared. I have now been on Risedronate for approx 2 years and so far so good. Whether it’s beneficial to my bones is another unknown story. I was put on AA after a Dexa scan, no consultation just a note from clinic admin to GP to prescribe it and have another Dexa in 5 years! To me that is unacceptable when side effects can be crippling. I asked to change to Risedronate and fortunately few side effects. GP claims ignorance of Dexa Scan readings so no-one in charge but me!
Perhaps you should ask to change and see if that helps.
Best wishes
Thanks for replying. Interesting to know your experiences. Fortunately I have been lucky enough to be part of a trial of acupuncture for chronic pain, and this seems to be helping. But if the pain continues I will follow up the AA side effects route.
Same here just been prescribed AA been on it 6 weeks suffer with body aches, dry tongue and trouble with throat feeling like something stuck. when I was prescribed it was told would get a review in a month, when asked doctors just gave me another one for 4 weeks. sometimes feel you are alone.
Will try and speak to docs, but I do think we should get a review to check how we feel and any effects that might be causing us problems.
Hi. I was placed on this many years ago and within 2 weeks was barely able to walk. Swollen joints and pain. Came off and this all stopped. Went on again and same happened. It is now on my GP notes that I have severe reaction of AA. Because of this I decided not to take any treatments for my osteoporosis for 6 years because I was too afraid I would get same reaction. As a result my bone density decreased and I ended up fracturing several times. Since then I have been on Evenity (injections) and now on Zolendronic infusions. I have not suffered any of the reactions that I had taking AA with both of these treatments. I do have ME, so not sure whether this is why I clearly could not tolerate AA. I hope you manage to get some answers and relief from your pain
