Alendronic Acid and Adcal side effects

Hi all, my 83 year old Mum has had fractured sacrum and pelvis last year, and is now able to walk with a stick, but by no means back to how she was - she was very active, walking all the time, and seemed like someone twenty years younger, if not more! Bit by bit she is doing a little more, but cannot stand too long, has to rest etc.

Two MRIs but not DEXA, and useless GP care if I am honest, have to fight for everything and get fobbed off totally now, like my questions are annoying them.

Mum has Alendronic Acid tablet once a week, and takes Adcal twice a day, and some paracetamol and ibuprofen. Her main side effects right now are slightly swollen legs and feet, a feeling of tightness across them - and it’s not the same as when inactive, plus she has been on the move much more now, and elevates when possible etc. I feel like this is a side effect, anyone else have the same? She has some hair loss too, but nothing too much fortunately. Also, her appetite was reduced, which has also improved, but still occasionally she feels full very quickly. Also, she has always needed the loo in the night, but sometimes now it is more frequent.

I appreciate some of these are mentioned in the medication side effects on leaflets, some effects change over time etc., but it’d be good to hear about other people’s views and experiences.

Thanks so much,

Dan

Hi @DanJA

Thank you so much for sharing with us here

It sounds like it’s been a really difficult and frustrating time for you and your mum. If it would help to talk things through, we would warmly invite you to get in touch with our Free osteoporosis Helpline of specialist osteoporosis nurses who would be very happy to chat. We also have a range of information about Alendronate (alendronic acid) and Calcium that you may find useful at this time.

We hope that as our new community grows, our members will be able to drop by to share their own experiences and thoughts here. Please do keep posting or reaching out whenever you feel it might help.

Wishing you and your mum all the very best,
Lulu
