Any questions I should my GP

Hi there, I’m newly diagnosed with osteoporosis & am quite frightened about what this means for the future. It seems I had pregnancy related osteoporosis 28 years ago but this was only diagnosed a few years ago despite having multiple spine fractures & back pain for most of this time. Things improved for a few years in my 30’s but my recent dexa scan shows I’m now in the osteoporosis range but no new fractures. I’ve got an appointment with my GP on Monday and don’t really know where to begin & what questions I should be asking, particularly about potential medication. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, many thanks.

Not sure what you can ask. Why don’t you have a really good look at the whole ROS website and see what sort of things stand out that you would like to know more about although saying that I’m not sure how much your average GP could tell you. You will be able to read all about the various osteoporosis drugs on there although I’m not sure what the options are if any - most people seem to start on bisphosphonates.

Depending on how old you are it might be worth investigating body identical HRT so you could mention that.

I think the ROS website which covers pretty much everything to do with osteoporosis - diet, vitamins, exercise, you could always look at my other favourite website Melioguide.com would be worth reading plus reading what people have to say on here and like I say jot down anything that you’d like to know more about although to be honest I think making contact with the ROS nurses would probably be better than your average GP - gosh I sound full of confidence in regular doctors don’t I! Also ask if there is a fracture liaison service near where you live or are there any ROS groups in the area but I think you could find that out from their web site.

Hopefully someone else will come along with more suggestions.

Thanks ever so much for your reply. Thats really helpful. I’ve just been unsure where to start really, I’ve been reading a lot of info & feel a bit overwhelmed. I’m 52 so will definitely ask about the HRT option thank you & will keep reading up.

I’ve not got a lot of faith in the GP either, they’ve not been very helpful with this for the last 28 years so we shall see. I will keep reading through the ROS website, thank you.
