Delayed Release Risedronate

My friend who lives in Canada takes Delayed Release Risedronate. This one can be taken with food and is much kinder on the upper GI tract. I have recently been experiencing worsening of my acid reflux whilst on Alendronic Acid tablets, though I take them correctly. It looks like the delayed release tablets are not available on prescription in the UK. Just checking if anyone managed to have it prescribed? My GP said that switching to regular Risedronate is not likely to make a difference. I know people get moved to Zolendronic Acid infusions, but it would be nice to try delayed release tablets first.

Hi Gala

Is it the once a week soluble tablet? I take that one too. I had been taking Lansoprazole for reflux, but will no longer take that type of medicine due to its possible effect on bones. Instead I take aloe Vera juice with digestive enzymes ( Holland and Barratt do it) which seems to help. I know my triggers - coffee, cheese, wine and chocolate, basically me favourite foodstuffs :joy:, so try not to have them all in one day! I also gave a drink of (skimmed) milk before my coffee. It works for me although I know others might disagree. So, after 6 months on alendronate I have had hardly any acid reflux, including on the day I take the tablet.

Good luck with your meds.

Hi, thank you for responding. I take tablets that I need to swallow, not water-soluble. Maybe I need to try those. I had an endoscopy today and they discovered hiatus hernia and possible Barrett’s. They took biopsies and I will have to wait for about 8 weeks for results! If Barrett’s is confirmed alendronic acid will not be an option. I will probably be offered Zoledronic acid infusion. Now I am not sure what to do: to pause AA or to continue till I have answers about my biopsies. I am inclined to pause. I will call ROS helpline and my GP for advice. I am glad it works well for you. Also, with Barrett’s it’s too much a risk to stop PPIs unfortunately. I have been thinking about Aloe Vera Juice. It might be worth trying.

The waiting is awful. Keeping fingers crossed for you.
