Genetics has won 🫤

Hello everyone,

I’m very relieved and grateful to read your posts. I am sorry we must all go through this. I am 50 years old. Due to my mother and aunt’s early osteoporosis diagnosis (early 50s), I decided to commit to a lifestyle of healthy living - decades of resistance training and a good diet. I’ve even been a BODYPUMP & BODYCOMBAT (Les Mills) instructor for 15 years and began lifting weights at the age of 16. To date, my skeletal muscle mass is super high and I feel overall very good.

Despite all of this, my recent bone scan revealed a lumbar score of -3.2! My hip is [mild] osteopenia and forearm normal. This really sucks, but I’m trying to stay positive. Fortunately, I don’t believe I’ve suffered any confirmed fractures to date. However, I now suspect maybe a recent mild cervical spine compression (based on what I’ve read in your very informative posts).

My height is just under 5’1 and I am pretty muscular. I suppose this would all serve as preventative measures - I guess lifting weights hasn’t been a total waste of time. I’m now considering HRT but still a bit nervous about this.

(FYI - I am Bermudian/British of mixed race (Caribbean black/Portuguese).

Wishing everyone well :folded_hands:t4:.

Well done you.We all could take a leaf out of your book.I do go to gym,I used to enjoy walking, but find it difficult over uneven ground, and I am also aware of tripping up and falling. I do weights every day,so keep hoping this having an effect.Good luck and keep exercising.x

Thanks for responding! Yes definitely - being careful on the uneven terrain when running. My mother was a jogger and finds it now safer to walk on her walking pad. She’s 70 this year and has never suffered any fractures despite an early diagnosis of osteoporosis at 50. She never took HRT and only recently has been put on the once a month pill - Ibandronate.

I’ve just started HRT (progesterone pill and estrogen patch). Fingers crossed I see improvement in 2 years during my next scan.

All the best :folded_hands:t4:
