Hip fracture

6 weeks ago I went to a dance class to get fit. I ended up falling and breaking my hip! It wasn’t just a stumble - I flew through the air and landed hard straight on my hip on a wooden floor. It counts as a fragility fracture but I think there is a big difference between that and a spine fracture after a sneeze or a twist. My T score in my hip had recently gone into osteoporosis -2.6 at my last dexa scan. My spine had actually improved from -2.4 to -2.2.

I had dynamic screw surgery. It’s still painful but getting better.

I am hoping to build up my muscle strength and bone density with diet and exercise.

I’m 71, tall, female.

I broke my hip in September. I’ve been told I have a fragility fracture but I don’t accept this. Like you I flew through the air and landed very hard on my hip on a marble floor. Had a DEXA Scan in December and the results were hip -2.9 and spine -1.9

I’ve had no medication at the moment because I’m waiting for the dentist at the hospital to remove a damaged post after I lost my crown. I’ve decided to have a yearly infusion once sorted.

My hip was repaired with 3 cannulated screws. I still have aches and pains but have been told that’s normal

interesting.. Yes I’ve got some dental work to be done before I decide on the medication. I might try diet and exercise for a year and then see what my scan results are. I will take the medication if my spine gets worse. I wouldn’t want to get those spine fractures that just happen without hardly any reason and leave you with back pain.

I’m hoping to fully recover from the hip fracture but I suppose there will be some aching with use. I’m only 6 weeks post op so still got pain and limited mobility. Using crutches.

Yes I was on crutches and walker. Used the walker for first 6 weeks because I was only allowed to toe touch. Then slowly weight bearing until X-ray at 12 weeks post op. Then able to fully weight bearing. Now I can walk unaided unless it’s long distance in which case I use a foldable stick.

Are you having physio? Keep in touch. I’d be interested in how you get on without meds

I’m getting very good support from community physio, OT and therapy assistant. Supervising exercises, doing stairs, curbs, walking with crutches, getting in shower etc. next week the assistant is going to get on and off a bus with me. It’s a 6 week service. I live in Hackney, London. I know people in other areas who have not got such good support.

Wow that’s amazing! In hospital I was shown how to climb the stairs before I was discharged on post op day 2. Then 14 weeks post op I had 2 physio sessions of half an hour for hip strengthening exercises and that was it. I was signed off.
