New diagnosis

Hello everyone. Just found out I have osteoporosis and am struggling to get my head around it. I’ve been googling like mad trying to find out out how this will affect my life and I have to say I’m a bit scared. I’m so glad that this community is available because I feel like I need to know what to do with myself. Trying to figure out what changes I need to make, do I need to stop working, do I have to wrap myself in cotton wool? My head is spinning! I know I’ll figure it out but for now I’m just feeling sorry for myself xx

Hi, welcome to the group. It takes time getting your head round this diagnosis. The ROS website is a good place to start finding out about osteoporosis.

Not sure about your situation, but I stumbled upon Brick House bones on facebook. This is run by a physical therapist (physio) in US & she primarily has YouTube videos (free) that goes through exercises that help strengthen muscles and bones. She some for beginners through to advanced stuff. She will not discuss medications as she is not a doctor, but she does looks at the evidence that is out there & has a paid ‘app’ with a lot more stuff on.

One thing to remember is that you are still the you that you were before this diagnosis.

Take care

Thankyou Cade1, I know I’ll adapt and it’s helpful to know that there are others out there and I’m not alone. I’m worrying about stupid things at the moment like can I still go to gigs, can I still walk my dogs (they pull a bit), can I still pick up my granddaughter. All silly things i know but right now they just seem important x

These things are not silly, they are all part of the ‘not knowing’ and lack of supportive help that there is. When I was first diagnosed I found the ROS helpline especially helpful. It is manned by nurses who know a woeful lot about osteoporosis. They helped me work out what questions I needed to ask my gp.

It might be worth giving them a quick ring to talk things through.

Hi @TwinMum ,

Wishing you the warmest welcome to our community! Receiving a diagnosis can bring up so many questions and worries, so it’s really understandable if things are feeling overwhelming at the moment. We also appreciate that it can be difficult to talk about our health, so thank you for sharing here.

As Cade1 has kindly already mentioned, we have lots of support and information on our website that we’d invite you to take a look at. This includes lots of videos and FAQs that might feel helpful to have a look through at this time, such as the following video on ‘understanding your diagnosis’:

,
Please do keep reaching out here, as our community has a wealth of understanding and kindness to offer, and it’s so important that we don’t feel alone on our health journeys.

Wishing you the very best,

I think lots of us in this community have gone through the same feelings; so we absolutely understand. I stopped picking up my grandchildren, walked with a walking stick to make sure I didn’t fall, wouldn’t leave the house if there was snow on the ground … But I now make sure I exercise every day; do a mixture of balance, impact and weights, do little things like stand on one leg while waiting for the kettle to boil, stamp for some of the steps when walking …

I’m in a much better place, don’t use a stick anymore. But I have made small adjustments to my life - garden for no more than an hour then rest and lay flat for a little while; check my posture as I’m walking. I do pick-up my grandchildren but don’t play football with them anymore (worried I’ll fall over as they tackle me!!)

On here we’ll all have different tscores - mine are still above -3, and different levels of fitness before our diagnosis (we walked alot, did yoga, danced ballroom and Latin). I still do all that, have learned to listen to my body and rest when I need to rather than keep pushing as previous. I still do most of what I did before my spinal fracture.

So be assured, things get better and you get your confidence back. But knowledge and taking control are big factors to get there. I’ve read lots, sought advice from a physio, did the joint and pain management course from Nuffield gym (free), read and implemented advice from ROS. Good Luck on your journey.
