Hello All,
Just over 7 weeks ago I had a silly accident in my garden and I fell from our patio, flat onto my back in the border approx 30 cm lower. Sent home from ED with pain killers, all ok. 10 days later received a phone call informing me that I had a small compression/osteoporotic fracture of the T12 vertebrae and I would be referred to the bone health clinic (I have an appointment 21st July).
After 3 weeks I went to see a physio privately and have started some gentle exercises. I thought I was doing quite well initially, and last week tried a Tai Chi class and vacuumed a rug, since then my back has been much more uncomfortable. The pain does seem to be muscular and a bit more widespread across my back, the physio said this was to be expected and should settle down in the coming weeks, I do hope so.
Before this I felt I was looking after my health quite well, healthy diet, regular exercise, Pilates, yoga, Tai Chi and walking, also personal training since January, so would have thought I was ok, I didn’t really know much about osteoporosis before this!
Guess I’m waiting for continued improvement and my appointment.

I really hope your appointment goes well and the news is positive. We never think these things are going to happen to us. Try to stay positive and don’t overdo it until you’ve had your appointment.
Thanks for the support and wise words. I’m too impatient, just want to get back to doing what I did before!
I mustn’t run before I can walk…literally!
I hurt my back in August 22. Awful pain, an obvious slight stoop and a bulging tummy. GPs treated me for muscular problems. An X-ray in October suggested spinal fractures and a DXA scan in December revealed 5 compression fractures in my spine. Of course the pain wasn’t muscular, it was due my spinal nerves didn’t like these fractures. In retrospect I recognize that the pain, stoop and tummy bulge (caused by compression leading to 11cms height loss) are classic symptoms of osteoporosis which caused the fractures. 4 years later under the care rheumatology in the hospital (it took arguing for a year to get there) I’m much better with minor pain and I’m doing much more. The point of my story is that you are fortunate to being seen by bone specialist and make the best of it. Your situation may be a lucky, yes lucky, opportunity for early access to the appropriate treatment care. Best wishes for your future.
Hi peasandtoms, thank-you for your reply. Reading many of the posts on here and now yours, although waiting until late July for a bone health appointment seems like a long time, I realise I am fortunate in one way that at least my accident has meant that the osteoporosis has been identified and I am hopefully going to be followed up by the right team.
It’s such a shame that your journey has been such a long one and you’ve had to fight to get seen by the right team.
I guess by your user name that you are a gardener, I hope you’re able to continue doing some of that and are having a successful growing year x
