New to osteoporosis

Hello,

I fell off my bike while in France last July and fractured my clavicle, pelvis and sacrum, spending all summer in bed , on crutches or in a wheelchair.

On return to England I was very lucky to have an excellent physiotherapist for 6 months.

After having a bone density scan I found out that I have osteoporosis in my spine and osteopenia in my hips.

I received an email from the doctor with a list of things I should be eating and was told I’d have another appointment for a bone density scan in a year.

I’m 62, post menopause and was previously very active.

I have been vegetarian since aged 13.

My current life balance is complicated as I spend 6 weeks at home then 6 weeks living with and being the primary carer for my mother who has vascular dementia and alzheimer’s.

I just feel overwhelmed, confused and alone.

On the plus side I’m really enjoying eating vast quantities of broccoli…

Goodness, what an introduction into the world of fragile bones! It does sound as though the physio, and the broccoli have been of huge benefit though.

Juggling life and elderly parents can be such hard work, six weeks on, six weeks off, kudos to you :clap:t2:.

Hi Cloughie sorry to hear what you gave been through abd your doctors have been supportive tgat gives you the confidence in your doctors. Mt doctors over looked the severity of my spinal osteoporosis from the dexa scan also they faildd to tell me the severity of both hips with osteoporosis they prescribed Alendronic Acid for 5 years, finally my physiotherapist referred me to rheumatology n February 2026 I had the appointment a week ago and qas told by them that both my hips have sever dexa I was shocked by this so now I don’t have any confidence with my GP its so bad. Widhing best of luck.

Hi,

I’m really sorry to hear all that. You’ve really been through the mill.

I’m wishing you all the best and can only hope that the care you receive improves.

Make sure you get all the answers you need from your gp and maybe take someone with you as it is difficult to take in everything they tell you.
