I am Veronika and I just joined this online community. I’ve read a couple of the posts here and was really glad to see so many people sharing their experiences as it certainly makes one feel less alone. I am 23 and have osteopenia but am concerned about osteoporosis in the future as my DEXA scans got quite a bit worse over the past 3 years (especially in the lumbar spine area). I have an autoimmune liver condition and have been taking corticosteroids for it since I was 16, which is likely the main contributor to my deteriorating bone health.
I was wondering if anyone had any reccommendations for managing their bone health or if anyone has a similar experience to mine? I am taking a vit D3 and calcium supplement, I keep a balanced diet and stay active (I try to do a combination of impact and resistance training exercise as I’ve ready it helps with fracture risk and osteoporosis), but as I struggle with chronic fatigue due to my liver condition, it is challenging sometimes. As I am unlikely to stop my corticosteroid treatment in the foreseeable future, I will probably develop osteoporosis at some point in my life. I guess I’m just looking for a bit of support as it feels a bit isolating and gloomy at the moment…
Thank you in advance to anyone who responds to this post
Thanks for sharing your story. Sounds like you are doing all you can for now re: bones so just stay consistent with your nutrition, supplements and strength training without overdoing it and exhausting yourself. Would be lovely to meet you if you can join the young persons session this evening. We meet monthly and often just talk and share experiences but tonight have a guest speaker talking to us about yoga and how to modify it safely which should be fab.
Wishing you the warmest welcome to our community, thank you for sharing here It’s really understandable that seeing changes in your scans, alongside managing other health conditions, can bring up worries about the future. So, we’d warmly welcome you to reach out to our helpline of specialist osteoporosis nurses who can chat through your situation further.
Thank you so much. I am not sure I can make it today as I am currently in a different time zone but will be looking forward to joining a future meeting
