Newly diagnosed

Hello.

Ive just been diagnosed with osteoporosis and dr has put me on rizedronate wkly tablet and daily calcium tablets. I am concerned about side effects i have read about ie jaw problems & other side effects. Anyone got any advice or experience ?

Hello. Welcome to the group. There is a lot of information about jaw problems and osteoporosis treatments on the ROS website. This is a very rare side effect and can scare people when they see this. There is also lots on there about supplements, diet and nutrition. A lot of people find the calcium tablets do not agree with them but doctors seem to prescribe this as soon as they find out you have been diagnosed. You might want to find alternatives through diet. Vitamin D3 is one of the most important supplements for people with OS. I take Vit D3 and K2 which I buy myself. The combined Calcium and D3 did not agree with me. It was the calcium bit in this combined tablet which caused me to have digestive problems. I have since heard that apparently this form is not good for heart health so I am glad I decided to stop taking it. Blood tests have shown I do not need the calcium as I get enough through diet but I know many people take different forms of calcium supplements which are much healthier. Wishing you all the best

Hi there

I follow a few very good osteo specialists on Instagram. One if them, rheum.md posted a video to explain the risks of ONJ and AFF. I’ve tried to attach screen shots here, but, basically she says the risk is less than 1%.
