Overwhelmed

I am 82 years old. My husband is nearly 86. In being his carer for the last 3 years ( dementia, balance problems, broken hip due to osteoporosis!, bladder cancer etc) I completely neglected myself & even managed to forget I’d had a Dexa scan 8 years ago which diagnosed osteopenia (but said I’d be fine with cheese omelettes & walking). I trusted an osteopath too long, was not fully checked out following a fall in July 25. In November 25 my husband fell, was hospitalised for internal bleeding , due to apixaban, ultimately he was further hospitalised as an emergency, & drained of 3L of blood on Jan 5th. Simultaneously my back which had been getting increasing bad became insuperable . Quite clear I could no longer act as chief carer for my husband who was discharged to a private care home. With much trouble I have now had both spinal fractures and osteoporosis diagnosed (Dexa score 1.7 for spine but not sure what that means). Comfortable in bed or recliner. Pain relief: cocodamol causes constipation, ibuprofen gel & tens belt work great. Pain relief patches on their way but when? Am having trouble working out what treatment I’d be best with & what care is realistic . Had difficulty getting referred to osteoporosis clinic (I know waiting list is long). What do I do?

Can I add that I also have osteoporosis diagnosed Mardy

Hi & welcome to the forum.

What a lot is going on

Hi & welcome to the forum.

You have got a lot going on at the moment. Obviously, I cannot advise you what to do, but the nurses on the ROS helpline are very knowledgeable & may be able to help you. I also found the ROS website really helpful in terms of nutrition, exercise and pharmacological treatments so I would also look at that.

Hope these are all helpful starting points, do let us know how you get on x
