Advice please

I fell in September and broke my wrist that then needed pinning and plate. I had a DEXA scan that shows I am losing bone density faster than expected. No follow up just have another DEXA scan in two years. It is my responsibility to tell my GP that I need another scan. I have osteopenia

I would have thought that the GP would have discussed it with me to see if I heed to take any drugs or vitamin D and Calcium to help the decrease in my bone density.

I’m sorry to hear you have this. The attitude from the hospital is dreadful and unacceptable. If I were you, I’d insist on an appointment with your GP as I did. It’s really not good enough that you’re left in limbo. Also contact nurses at ROS for help.

Hello

Try to get your 800mg of calcium from your diet if possible . Calcium pills can cause problems , I was told by my endocrinologist to just take one tablet if I had to not the 4 tablets a day the GP told me to take .

Everyone needs a vitamin D supplement but they were wrapped up in the Adcal calcium tablets so I just buy them now . The endocrinologist said to take 1000iU in summer daily and 2000IU in winter in the UK but to get your vitamin D levels checked twice a year if possible to make sure your not deficient or have too much building up because it is fat soluble vitamin that builds up in your body unlike water soluble vitamins that flush out of the body daily .

Like you I had terrible problems with the calcium carbonate tablets I was prescribed and after I had tried a few my fracture liaison nurse and I decided that I was getting enough from my diet. I felt I was getting too much calcium and not enough D3
I now take one capsule of Together Health Atlantic seaweed based calcium just to be on the safe side and I buy my own D3 capsules. I take 1000iu daily and test my bloods twice a year when I can increase or decrease. I also take magnesium and K2Mk7.
I found the ROS online calcium calculator really helpful, there are lots of foods you would never think of that you can eat throughout the day to top up your calcium and the other thing I have every day is between 70 and 100 mg of dried prunes. They are supposed to be very good for your bones.

How do you contact the nurses at ROS??

If you scroll right to the foot of this page you will see ‘Contact us’ and I imagine if you click on that you will be able to make contact.
I used to find the information I needed on their main site, I’m not sure where to find it on this page but if you use this link

click on ‘Information and support’ just below the logo have a look there. You will find loads of useful information.

Hi JillieH

I had the same treatment from my GP when I asked for a scan he said it wouldn’t show anything; it was muscle pain. I didn’t know about the ROS when I first was diagnosed so I spoke to another GP who advised me to make another appointment with my GP take someone with me to fight my case; MRI scan arrange that’s hiring found out I had osteoporosis, 5 compressed vertebrae fractures and 2 old rib fractures.

Speak to the ROS nurses they will help you or look on there website so much information.

Hope you get on alright, best wishes Maryann.
