Dental Health

One of the big suprises I had when I got my referral to go onto Evenity was that I needed to be ‘dentally healthy’. This was just after COVID and my dentist had retired. It took me ages to find a dentist that would take me on. When I found one a lot of dental work was needed. Also I wass advised to have regular check-ups. I am wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience and if so whether there is additional information needed about this for patients… and for patients to give their dentists.

Yep I was told not to go onto risodronate as I have outstanding dental problems and a broken tooth that needs extracting .

As I’m already immune suppressed the osteoporosis drug can affect bone healing of the jaw and I wasnt going to risk that.

I’m going down the HRT treatment route instead for my new diagnosed osteoporosis

I was prescribed Binosto and the prescribing nurse told me that osteoporosis of the jaw was rare usually happening after dental surgery. She also told me it was easy to resolve with antibiotics. She did question me about my dental health first though. At my next dental check up I told the dentist about taking Binosto (they always check if I’m taking medication), and they didn’t seem overly concerned about it.

I would be interested to know about HRT therapy for osteoporosis as I’ve had problems with other treatments. I was diagnosed in 2006 with ‘advanced spinal osteoporosis’ but did not have a fracture until 2022 - and I’ve always fallen over fairly frequently due to weak ankles. I assume that period fracture free might have been because of doing Tai Chi, Pilates and yoga. I think if the supporting fibres can be strong they will support the bones in the event of a fall. That fracture was after lockdowns preventing any exercise classes for a long period. (I know I should have done them independently - but didn’t).

After the diagnosis in 2006, I underwent parathyroid injections for almost a year, together with calcium. I lost weight and started to get strange reactions to any green vegetables (they had an off smell and made me feel sick). I had to stop. I would have been due to spend the next year on bisphosponates but needed a root canal filling and my dentist (who also had osteoporosis) said I should have the tooth extracted because any problems with the filling could cause jaw osteocrenosis.

A whole paragraph has just disappeared from the screen!

I was given Strontium Ranelate which caused very irritated shins but the leaflet said to watch for rashes and the irritation didn’t identify to me as a rash. With hindsight I should have stopped taking it earlier. I had quite a gap with just taking Vit D. I then had another session with Strontium Ranelate and developed a severe redness and soreness along the pressure line of the bra - I still have a problem with that several years after stopping the treatment.
I’ve had a long period now on Vit D with K2 (approved by the consultant) but in the past couple of years, especially since the spinal fracture, I have been resisting any other treatment. I have quite an allergy prone system with a past life-threatening reaction to sulphonomide (contained in an antibiotic) so am extremely cautious about medicines. There always are side effects and I am, perhaps, more likely to be most affected. For that reason I feel any injection now would be a large dose all at once and therefore more risky so would only consider something which is a gradual treatment.

Unless we really thoroughly investigate what side effects there are, we are not in a good position to decide whether a treatment is right for us.

I stayed HRT 6mths ago for my osteoporosis

I’ve only had side effects when I went abroad to a hot country and my ankles swelled dreadfully on thr boat and plane. I’ll have to see if they do it again this summer.

I’m taking treatment as hrt patches as I need a tooth taking out and don’t want to risk the risodronate drug.. I’m also in perimenopause she thought the hrt might help
