Does anyone have advice about visiting a hairdresser after a spinal fracture, is it safe to have a back wash?
Hi I wash my hair at home before I go to the hairdressers as I find the back wash too uncomfortable.
Ditto, I also wash my hair before I go. Unfortunately, I no longer have hi lights put in my hair but easier to go without than have the pain. I tell myself grey is the new blonde!
This is something I never thought about - whether it’s safe. I’ve been to the hairdressers several times since I fractured 3 vertebrae last October. I just sort of coped somehow. I can’t say it made my back worse but it’s not getting much better either. Something for me to think about.
Hi. First time when I fractured spine I recovered and continued to visit hairdresser as normal. After subsequent fractures I found I was no longer able to get comfortable in the hair wash chairs, despite using a booster cushion and back cushions. Luckily I have gone grey naturally so no longer have any colours which would require washing out. I have a dry cut. I have just been today and the big benefit is that hair is in much better condition from not having colouring and it much cheaper and quicker. Maybe you could try this. You never know over time you might recover enough to go back to shampoo. Wishing you all the best
Thanks for your advice.. I hadn’t thought to do that,
Thank you. I’ll try a dry cut, it seems a safer option until I am not in so much pain.
I take my own cushions and explained to my hairdresser and between us we manage fine. I get up and have a short walk around half way through when she is cutting .
My hairdresser has a booster cushion to raise me up a bit and I take a soft cushion with me (which I incidentally take everywhere with me) and I have my hair washed in a back basin.
Thanks Tess, that’s really helpful advice, I think I’ll have to get into the habit of taking a cushion everywhere.
I didn’t go for at least 2.months after my fractures to allow some healing. I warned the hairdresser that it might be a problem but it was fine as it turned out.
Thanks Jax. That’s good advice. I’m going to book an appointment next week and warn the hairdresser that I might have difficulty, and I’ll take a cushion with me. It’s 6 weeks since my fall and the pain has just started to reduce a bit. Fingers crossed!
I have had many spinal fractures over the last 10 months and I have to say when I first visited the hairdressers after my first lot of fractures I wasn’t too bad with the back wash. What I have noticed though when I visit the dentist lying straight back in the dentist chair does hurt my back.
It’s too painful so I wash my hair before I go and she just sprays it.
