Hi I’m new to the site and feeling very much on my own at the moment. Following a fractured metatarsal July 2025 I had a dexa scan in Jan 26 and seen at the bone health clinic, I was diagnosed with osteopenia, I was advised to take Vit D and Calcium supplements and told I’d be recalled in 2 years. In April I suffered 2 thoracic vertebral fractures. Both my GP and local A&E diagnosed severe muscle sprain despite the osteopenia and known fragility. I was given codine for the pain and diazipem for the muscle spasms. It was only because I saw a physiotherapist privately, who suspected fractures and immediately contacted my GP, that I got an x-ray. Subsequently the local hospital MSK dept. contacted me by phone, they decided that as I was improving and the pain wasn’t as bad, this was 8 weeks post fractures, that they didn’t need to see me f2f and gave me a 3 month open appointment, I was told to contact them if there are significant changes in my symptoms. I just do not know what to do, I’ve been trying to get another GP appointment but none are ever available. I’m really worried that I will suffer more fractures, I’d like to try to gently exercise but am afraid I’ll injure myself further. Any suggestions of where to go, who to contact, what I can do to help myself would be very welcomed. BTW I’m 70
Hi @KGB57 ,
Wishing you the warmest welcome to our community
Thank you for sharing what you’ve been through - it sounds like it has been a really difficult year, particularly after experiencing further fractures and trying to manage pain.
It’s completely understandable that you’re now feeling unsure about your next steps. We warmly welcome you to get in touch with our Osteoporosis Helpline, where one of the specialist osteoporosis nurses would be happy to chat through your situation further.
We also have lots of information and support on our website that might feel helpful at this time:

Hi KGB57, I had an accident in my garden and fractured T12 in April. It wasn’t initially picked up on X-ray, but 10 days later I was contacted and told I had an osteoporotic compression fracture and would be referred to bone health. I finally say a specialist nurse 2 weeks ago and had a dexa scan and am waiting for the results.
I have ploughed through all the information in this site, I especially found a webinar explaining osteoporosis and treatment very helpful. In particular a document entitled strong, steady and straight very helpful.
I am also fortunate in being able to pay for monthly physio and she did a thorough assessment and has given me progressive exercises.
I do think it seems as though we’re very much left to get on with things ourselves.
Don’t know if this has been any help. Keep your chin up xx
Thank you for replying, I’m nearly 70 and have always been fit and healthy, no health issues at all so this has really knocked me for 6. Trying to get any help and support from my GP has been difficult to say the least. You do start to wonder if agism plays a part
It’s likely my bone fragility was caused by an early menopause (43). Unfortunately my GP at the time wouldn’t prescribe HRT as he didn’t feel my symptoms were bad enough and there was some “possible” link to breast cancer starting to be reported so I didn’t push it.
Hope you finally get the support and appropriate treatment now you are finally being seen. Stay well.
