Living with Osteoporosis & broken bones

My experience of eight years & learning to manage osteoporosis, starting very slowly & changing how to sit & sleep comfortably, managing the pain & household items being lightweight. Over time things get easier, short walks, household chores, always doing little at a time. Just do the things you can manage. Meeting people for a chat & cup of tea at a club makes a great difference. I found gardening a great release, being in the open air changing the garden to make things easier, I work at a slower pace but it is so rewarding. Even preparing meals helps you forget your pain. I am so much better now for preserving & gaining strength every day.

Maryann, this is very encouraging. I’m sure it has not been easy for you. :growing_heart:

Thank you for replying, yes it’s been very difficult to keep active, it has been my willpower & determination to overcome 7 compressed vertebrae fractures & 3 rib fractures, curvature of the spine & loss in height but I have come through with the help of my husband.

Glad things have improved for you. I’m very limited but pleased when I can do even little things. At 70 I can take it easy anyway though going one step forward three back atm. Main thing is to control pain, not quite enough now but can up meds till settles again. Hope things continue to improves for you. :hugs:

Hi Fraid, thank you for answering, I do still at times get severe pain, found I can managed it by resting awhile or using an electric head pad or a soft cushion placed in my lower back. Looking back I couldn’t walk, getting upstairs to bed was excruciating so I lived upstairs for a week: hospital in a wheelchair for my MIR scan, before my determination kicked in and I made myself get up and try doing small things, like preparing lunch/tea.
Often 6 compressed vertebrae fractures and 3 rib fractures so keep strong and gently do things.
I am 82 and now managing all the meals, cloths washed / ironing, housework and my salvation is gardening which takes me away from all my worries.
Helping others whatever illness they have is so rewarding.
Take care, best wishes. Maryann

Glad you’re doing so well. I was able to do a lot more, inc bits housework until I got RA, now useless again but hoping it will improve. :crossed_fingers:

Hi Fraid, it’s very frustrating when you are able to do jobs and then another problem happens, hopefully you will be okay in a day or two. I have been altering some tops to fit a little better today but had to rest as my back decided to give me pain, after resting feels better. Wish you all the very best.
