New to this group

I have newly been diagnosed with osteoporosis, and you can imagine how I felt when told as always thought I looked after myself, with exercise, healthy eating and vitamins.
I feel very worried about taking the medication I have been perscribed, of which I only got yesterday, so many side effects, I know not everyone have these, but doesn’t stop me worrying.

How has everyone else been while taking Alendronic acid?

Hi there, I can totally understand where you are coming from, I have always been extremely active and fit and when I was told that I had Osteoporosis it really hit me initially, I somehow thought I was invincible!

I was also prescribed Alendronic acid and started taking it again in January of this after being diagnosed towards the end of last year. I did also take Alendronic acid a few years ago when I was diagnosed with Osteopenia as they obviously considered that my fracture risk was high.

So, I’m on my second lot of Alendronic acid now and have had no side effects at all. Ido t particularly want to take it but after balancing everything up I decided to that it was the best way forward for me.

I did have great improvements in my DEXA scan after the first list but then my bone density soon started to drop again so this time, after doing loads more research I’ve changed how I exercise. I’m still an avid walker and walk every day but I now do strength training three times a week and jump training three times a week and balance exercises where I can fit them in during my day.

So, I’m hoping that when I finish this course of Alendronic I can maintain my bone density more effectively now I am older and wiser!

I’m sure that everybody feels nervous about starting to take new treatment, that’s completely normal but at the end of the day, until you’ve tried taking it you won’t know if it has any side effects that bother you.

I started this round of tablets in January and didn’t want to swallow the tablets for a few weeks as I felt reluctant to take them but here I am, 4 months down the line and take it every Monday morning without a thought now.

If you are feeling nervous, the ROS nurses are a great source of reassuring support if you give them a ring.

Sorry for all of the typo mistakes, I really should check what I’ve written before I send it:joy:

I am 88 and have advanced osteoporosis- I decided not to have the medication offered due to the side effects- I was given leaflets advising diet and exercise- - I follow the advice and now 12 months after my last Dxa scan when they predicted doom and gloom because I refused Denosumab andAlendronic Acid - it took me a few months to shake off the worry- my T score is high but I am in control of my risk factor- no ladders- sensible shoes- bend your knees when stooping down- daily walking at a gentle pace- the only medication I take is Vit D3- as I have Bowens Disease so have to keep out of the sun and use factor 50 suncream.:cherries:

I’ve been taking Alendronic Acid for about 4 months now with no noticeable side effects. Just make sure you follow the instruction to the T, take first thing in the morning an empty stomach with at least 200ml water and stay sitting or standing upright for 30 mins. You can move about just don’t bend over. Don’t take any other liquids ( tea, coffee etc) any food Or other medicines for that 30 mins either.

Than you so much, I have started taking them, and so far so good
