Osteoporosis and Thyroid

Continuing the discussion from ? Secondary Osteoporosis/metabolic bone disorder:

Hello! I’m new to the Community. I was diagnosed in January 2025. It came as a shock because the only risk factor I had was that my Mum( at the age of 94!) had a hip fracture! I have Hashimotos and take Thyroxine. I wonder whether this has affected my bones? I seem unable to absorb Vit D and now take 100ug daily, but for many years I think I was deficient. I would like to know if the Hashimotos and Vit D deficiency have played a part in developing Osteoporosis. Does anyone else have a similar combination of conditions?

Hi Dizzycat. Welcome! I’m pretty new to the community, too. I’m sorry to hear this. I’d say that it is very important to try and find the reason for your osteoporosis. In my case it seems to be assumed it’s my age (post menopausal, thin, borderline early menopause) but I’m not sure and I think we all need to get the cause investigated rather than assumptions being made. Re thryoid and taking thryoxine. I take it too and I used to think it was a contributory factor but actually I now think it’s only the over-active thryoid that is the risk factor - but check with your doctor or one of the ROS nurses. Re vitamin D, have you tried Better You Vitamin D3+K2, which is a mouth spray and may work better for you (if you’re not finding your current supplement effective). That combination - D3+K2 is the one you want (so I believe - I’m not a medic!). I hope you find someone here who has the same issues as you and is able to help more. Good luck!

Hi, I too have recently been diagnosed with osteoporosis but have had Hashimotos for over 20 years. The Hashimotos is now under control but I have taken levothyroxine for a long time and worry that this was a contribution factor. The GP told me to take Calcium/Vit D tablets first thing in the morning but I take levothyroxine then! After much research I take thryoid meds first thing, wait 30 minutes before tea/coffee/breakfast and then 4 hours before any other meds.

I hit menopause at 48. I now know that thyroid could be a factor in this but nobody told me or suggested any meds like HRT to help ward of osteoporous. It has only been caught now in my 60s due to a broken wrist by the hospital. I get angry at the the focus on mens health: my husband has been sent for automatic scans or a whole range of issues effecting men but there is nothing for women. I worry for my daughter who was disgnosed with extreme hashomotos at 17 years old. She has been given thyroxine and dismissed. Luckily she is now forwarned about the risks of osteoprous and is doing her best to keep fit and very active.

Hi

Thanks for your reply. My under active Thyroid was diagnosed around the time of the menopause. Like you, I wasn’t given any information about protecting my bones and I was fairly sedentary at the time as I was working . I’m more active now I’ve retired!
I was prescribed Alendronic acid for the osteoporosis and I take it first thing once a week. I have to take the Thyroxin later that morning.
I have concerns about being over prescribed Thyroxin but I have a blood test for T3 and T4 every 6 months so at least I know if I’m taking too much.
Best wishes

Hi Lizzie 3

I tend to think you’re right about overactive thyroid being more of a problem - that’s why it’s important to get T3 and T4 checked regularly.

I haven’t been prescribed a calcium supplement.

I just buy Vit D and take the tablets. There seem to be some issues with taking Calcium supplements.

I try to get calcium from my diet.

But thanks for the recommendation about the spray.

It might be better to use a Vit D spray rather than tablets.

Best wishes

Dizzycat.

Hi

For me I think the Vit D spray works better. Like you I have regular T3/4 checks. Been OK so far and I’ve had this for a long time. Under-active though, which unlike an over-active one, isn’t an issue that could contribute to osteoporois I’m told.
