RE: First Teriparatide Injection Has anyone gained weight in their stomach while using Teriparatide?
Hi Sand, I’m just 6 months into Teriparatide , my stomach has got bigger…but so has my snack consumption sadly
. So at the moment I’m blaming me for that. It’s been very protruded since vertebral fractures as it is. I just had my first set of bone profile bloods checked and they are all normal so I’m happy with that. I’ve never really been without discomfort for last 2 years. Just started seeing a private physio to see if she can help with that. Heartened to see many of the excercises she has advised are all similar to those the R.O.S. advise. My Advanced nurse in my gp surgery told me she had used me as an example of a person whose osteoporosis ends up more problematic, think she was at a course where they said many people don’t suffer much !. She told me I was doing really well( don’t think I am but it cheered me up ). Told her I don’t count calories anymore..just calcium mgs!..hence larger stomach!.. keep calm and carry on is my new motto..hope you are feeling well today.
Hi. Not sure whether this is same for you but I suffer from osteo tum, as do many others in this community. I am very slim and so when this happened it was quite a shock. It is caused by spinal fractures causing loss of height. This then causes the internal organs to be squeezed into a tighter space and causes the stomach to look bloated. I have never put on any weight but do have this protruding stomach. Just wondered if this might be what’s happening to you and not weight gain.
I was on Teriparatide for 2 years the maximum time allowed, I finished the course in April I too had stomach bloating presumably because I injected in the stomach, it’s slowly going down. I had pain in my joints for a few months which slowly eased. It’s not an easy treatment to take but do stay with it, I recently had a Dexa scan which showed marked improvement
Good Luck
Thank u so much for replying to my question. Wishing you healthy bones!
Thank you for getting back to me. I appreciate it. Can I ask u how much weight you gained in your stomach and have you been able to lose the weight? Thank u again for answering. I am so frightened of this disease and the drugs used to treat osteoporosis.
Hi Beebop. I am sorry to hear of the pain and discomfort you are having. Thank you for getting back to me. I appreciate it so very much. You mentioned that you think the weight gain is bc u r eating more. Does the teriparatide cause hunger? Also, you mentioned calcium. Can the calcium cause stomach bloating? I’m just trying my best to figure out what causes the stomach gain that most women are having while taking teriparatide. I hope you feel better soon and I am so sorry that you are in discomfort.
Thank u Jan. I appreciate u answering my question.
Thank you. I was wondering if I can get help with injecting? I 'm worried I might not do it properly.
Hi Sand. I haven’t gained any weight. However, I have a protruding belly now which has been caused by the fractures in spine causing loss in height and squashing internal organs down into stomach. This is very common and the changing shape of my body has taken some adjusting to. Although it makes you look bigger than you were previously it doesn’t seem to add any weight gain. Since the fractures I am shorter now by 4 inches but somehow weigh less than I had before. It is only natural to feel frightened about the disease and drugs. It is scary and I know I did. Once I started to research and began to really believe that I am the person that knows my body best and what I can and cannot tolerate the more in control I became. The decision whether to take drugs or not is down to each individual. For me the decision to take OP drugs was made when I had reached the point where I had exhausted bone increasing diets, healthy living and exercise but still my bone density continued to decrease and I continued to fracture. I knew then that the future was starting to look very bleak if I continued as I was. I have not looked back since starting OP treatment, first with Romozosumab and then in my first year of Zolendronic infusions. I have not fractured since, am no longer on any pain relief, can do most things for myself now (although more slower), do online gentle exercise classes to help core strength, balance and build muscle, do guided meditation to help control pain and have undertaken chronic pain coaching to help control pain without need to medication and deal with the emotions associated with this disease i.e. feelings of loss. I can’t say any of this has been easy when you are in pain and cannot see the point (especially the guided meditation and chronic pain coaching) but over time it has worked and I can see the benefits to me all of this has had. Wishing you all the best with your journey
Thank you so much for your response and kindness. Wishing you healthy bones!
