Sharing our story

Thanks Jim for introducing yourself, sharing your story/journey and kicking off the younger people’s network.

I’m Sam and was diagnosed with osteoporosis aged 35 whilst undergoing infertility investigations. Turns out that being a ballet dancer throughout my teens, taking the OCP for 20 years (essentially having no menstrual cycle) and a strong family history were the perfect storm. I was in shock and denial for several years and despite having a loving husband, felt alone and quite isolated as most of my friends were bringing up kids and I just felt like an old lady. I started bone building medication when I was 40 and found that quite empowering perhaps in combination with getting older and accepting my diagnosis. Over the past 10 years my bone scores have remained stable which is a good response. There was never any emotional support from my GP or the hospital team, it was all just clinical. I thought this was because I didn’t really fit in any group due to my age but it’s still the case and is probably more due to lack of resources and understanding.

Five years ago I discovered the ROS, educated myself about my condition, the options available and optimised my diet and lifestyle whilst still allowing for fun things too. There are many things I wish I’d started earlier but it’s never too late and I feel stronger, happier and more positive about my body and future now than I ever have. I hope to be able to share experiences with younger people who find themselves in a similar position as I was and just meet some nice people for chit chat. Thank you ROS for setting up this group…let’s do it

Ooops should probably have posted this as a reply to Jim’s post rather then a new topic. Moderators do what you need to and bear with my learning curve :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Ah no problem Sam! Let’s see what ROS think and you can always re-post your post as a reply to mine if that’s most appropriate. Thanks for sharing your story too!
