I am newly diagnosed with Osteoperosis and I have been offered the infusion. I am concerned about the side effects as some of them sound quite scary!! Has anyone experienced any side effects at all? Particularly ONJ? Would love some guidance here as I’m trying to weigh up whether the benefits outweigh the risks. Thanks all!
Hearing that is a scary moment (I take alendronate), but when the Fracture Liaison Nurse prescribed my meds, she said that ONJ was rare, usually happened after dental surgery, ie extractions, and was easily treatable with antibiotics. On that basis, I didn’t rule out taking the meds and I think that the benefits outweigh the negatives.
If the possible side effects are bothering you, you could always contact the nurses here at the ROS for reliable information.
I was advised that the necrosis in the jaw is more likely when you’ve had treatment for cancer and even then it’s rare. Waiting to have my first infusion after dental treatment.
I am also newly diagnosed with Osteoperosis and am on the waiting list for the Zoledronic Acid infusion. I am quite worried about the side effects too and have had a dental checkup and fillings done before I start treatment. I am particularly worried about the spontanious thigh fracture! Not sure if this is very common but can’t bear thought of another fracture. It is difficult to decide what treatment is best but the Osterporosis clinc seem keen for me to start on the zoledronic acid infusion so I have just gone with that. Any experiences or advice on this would be much appreciated as scary decisions.
