HI I have Osteopenia, and recently wanted to have some dental implants, found out from my Dentist, I cannot have this done, because of the bone loss in my jaw, and my Lupus. I have gone for dental veneers, which look really good, they are suppose to last 15 years and only available privately. As any body faced the same problem as me, and what do their dentist suggestions.
Hi Shirley
I hear you! I was diagnosed with osteoporosis aged 39, and a decade on started having significant issues with my teeth fracturing (to match my vertebrae
). I have had 2 successful implants and am in the process of waiting for a third to embed and the bone to knit around it. The main issue is that this phase of ‘settling’ the implants is in at least twice as long as for people without OP. So perhaps ask again or get a second opinion? Wishing you all the best with this <3
Hi. I was wondering about implants. I’ve had 2 crowns that haven’t worked out well for me. The first one I had was next to where I had previously had a tooth taken out many years ago. Had the crown fitted but within 4 or 5 weeks started having pain and infections around the crown. Cut a long story short and I had to have the tooth underneath out privately which cost me £750. A couple of months ago I had another crown fitted the other side and once again next to a tooth that was missing. Within the last month the same story is evolving. I’ve had one lot of antibiotics already and am currently in pain again. No doubt I’ll go down the same path and have to have the tooth under the crown removed and if the fee hasn’t gone up another £750 to pay out.
I was wondering about implants but hate to think how much this will cost and will I get a similar scenario afterwards? How long does it take to imbed and knit around each implant? Is it then totally pain free and free of infections? I really don’t want dentures. But then the cost of an implant or two (one each side) will run into a small fortune especially after already forking out £1,500.
I am on Denusomab and have severe osteoporosis hence having to go to a specialist each time.
Hi I have been told by my dentist and Specialist, because of my Lupus which is an auto-immune condition, I am at great risk of having infectiions with implants and extractions. So I have gone for Veneers, I found a new dentist recently and it offered these as an alternative to my situation, as my last dentist did not do cosmetic implants, and it is so easy to have them, its like having a false nail on top of your old teeth, they last 15 years and as I am now 72 years old I think they will out live me and certainly not as expensive as implants were they drill into your jaw., and cost approximately £2.000 per tooth. My brother had one done years ago, but he now has to have it extracted because of infection under the implant. The reason I have dentures, my mother would not take me to the dentist when I was little girl, so most of my teeth were extracted because of infection under my teeth, and she had a real fear of dentists. So I should get my new dentist before xmas, so looking forward to that. I also cannot come off my Prolia for another 4 years, so that will be 10 years of having this drug. I have read an article from some Professor in Holland that Prolia can cause a fracture in some people at the top of the thigh bone, which if you don’t go onto another Osteoporosis drug could be a great worrry.
Good luck with your dentistry and getting the teeth you want.
Shirley
Hi
Prolia does have a side effect but very rare. It is called atypical femoral fracture. Just keep an eye out for any undue pain int the thighs and be sure to see your GP explaining about atypical femoral fracture. But it is a very rare side effect. Check out the ROS website for more information on PROLIA. Good luck
