Safe exercise

Hello, I was diagnosed with osteoporosis after a spinal and elbow fracture. I’ve been doing modified Pilates for more than 2 years which has helped. I’d like to start doing some work with weights but am worried about making my spinal injury worse, does anyone have any experience with finding a personal trainer with suitable experience to help with this?

Hi there

I was fortunate that in my gym there was a PT who is a qualified exercise therapist for those who have/had cancer and experience of those who have bone issues. You might find someone like this at a gym near you

I’d call round a few local gyms in person, ask for the gym manager and quiz them on strength training for osteoporosis to get a feel for their knowledge level. You could also do the same thing with Physiotherapists. Your GP might be able to recommend someone.

Good luck with your search.

Thank you for your response

Nuffield Health run a course on joint pain management which is free and you don’t have to be a member. I did this 12 months ago and now do the exercise programme at home. It has made a huge difference to my day to day mobility and most of the time I’m pain free (I wasn’t before). The programme has two themes: improving balance and improving strength. The strength programme uses weights. You apply online or can contact a Nuffield health gym for info. All depends if you have one near.

Ooh that sounds very promising thank you

Nuffield health gym. What is their website? would be great if they still offer this course as I would be interested in it.

Have put their website at the end of this. I rang the reception of my local gym to ask about the program. It was called the Joint Pain Programme. Good luck - different geographical areas have different levels of demand so there was a wait list in my area. https://www.nuffieldhealth.com

Hi

I managed to get onto the nuffiedhealth.com and sent them an email. The local gym still do the Joint Pain Programme which is for about 3 months or so and attendance twice a week. It is free but mostly for joint pains though it is likely the physios can support with osteoporosis.

Good to know and thank you

You are welcome. I did it on the recommendation of our MSK unit as I was struggling with back pain following my spinal fracture. 6 months in I was still in a lot of pain that was restricting what I did. The course was a game changer for me.

I have found a physio company ( Carter snd George) who seem to specialise in exercise and have a small gym in the premises.

Might be worth looking for physio led Pilates.

I am really lucky to have a very good Pilates teacher who is also a physiotherapist. I am in a group of five people of similar age and we’ve all got something ‘wrong’ with us, our teacher knows all of our aches and pains and takes the greatest care of us.

Our lass rule is not to do anything that hurts - even if she has told us to do it and even if we have done it before with no problem.

So when you find someone to work with - don’t do anything that causes pain even if they tell you to.

I agree physio led Pilates classes have worked for me. I have also used the videos available on the ROS website. I have used them when it it is too cold or wet to go out!
