Supplements

Hi all. I’ve got a question about what vitamins to take together.

I am taking D3 + K2. Would it be ok to add calcium and cod liver oil supplement?

Hi,

I take my D3 capsule (I buy my own, 1000IU) in the morning along with a single capsule of seaweed based calcium, just a top up my dietary calcium which is mostly fine. I also take 3 mg boron.

At night I take magnesium and K7-Mk7, an EkoPur seaweed based omega 3 DHA capdule, and my magnesium. So I would imagine it would be fine to add some calcium. I didn’t get on at all well with the calcium / vitamin D I was prescribed which is how I came to take the seaweed based calcium and as I don’t want to take too much calcium I only take one capsule rather than the recommended amount. I suppose my omega 3 capsule is similar to Your cod liver oil supplement. I do home blood tests to check my vitamin D

I also take between 70 and 100g dried prunes which are supposed to be good for your bones and a handful of unsalted nuts - Brazil, almonds and walnuts plus some sunflower and pumpkin seeds during the day. I eat a good healthy diet all cooked from scratch, I don’t eat junk foods, try to keep my sugar intake as low as possible and avoid fizzy drinks.

People say vitamins are a waste of money but I’m quite happy taking them so I do.

Thank you for the information. I eat a lot of nuts and most of my meals are made from scratch. What I find hard is having enough products that contain calcium. I’m not very good with drinking milk but I’m trying my best to include dairy products in my diet everyday. I really struggle eating prunes too but I’m trying to at least eat them every other day.

I drink very little milk. I’ve forced myself to eat Fage Greek yoghurt I take it on defrosted frozen mixed berries which are so tart I don’t really notice the yoghurt. I get a lot of my calcium from green leafy vegetables and things like salmon, canned salmon and tuna.

I found the ROS ‘calcium calculator’ really helpful for ideas - you’ll find it on the ROS website - there are all sorts of things that contain calcium that you can eat throughout the day to top up your calcium intake.

I would be cautious with cod liver oil supplement, as most of them contain Vitamin A. It’s usually easy to get sufficient through diet and too much A can be as harmful to the bones as not enough.
